Surfing with Purpose
By staying with us, guests are contributing to a sustainable Indonesia. Guests are also invited to speak with our staff conservationist and come see our Ecosystem Impact office on our resort grounds that offers Environment and Community programs. Feel free to bring and donate school supplies or simply donate to our efforts. We don’t see tourism and conservation as separate pursuits — we see them as intertwined. That’s why we maintain a close partnership with EcosystemImpact, a conservation organisation working across Simeulue and its surrounding islands, to help protect biodiversity, support local communities, and create sustainable models for growth
One of the more visible outcomes of this partnership is the songbird conservation breeding program that operates right on our resort grounds. Through collaboration with Mandai Nature and EcosystemImpact, we are helping rescue critically endangered local species such as the Simeulue Hill Myna and Barusan Shama by housing them in purpose-built aviaries and working toward reintroduction into protected habitats. EcosystemImpact is also leading community-based marine conservation efforts across southern Simeulue, using locally managed marine zones and indicator species like octopus to assess reef health and support sustainable fisheries.
On the social side, our collaboration enables educational outreach with local children, support for local rangers, and programs that foster community ownership of conservation. Through beach cleanups, environmental education, and community involvement in ecological decision-making, we aim to strengthen the relationship between people and place. Meanwhile, Mahi-Mahi’s day-to-day operations contribute directly to funding and hosting these efforts — through guest contributions, on-site facilities, and the visibility we bring to environmental issues.
In marrying surf hospitality with conservation, we believe we can create a model where tourism becomes a force for ecological regeneration rather than degradation. By staying with us, participating in awareness, or simply engaging with our conservation narrative, guests become active participants in protecting Simeulue’s forests, reefs, birds, and marine life for generations to come.
